Layers : Video

Layers is a performance for the camera.  In this work the artist has layered 3 types of film and video media one upon another. The first layer is sourced from a black and white 1950’s stag film.  The second layer is the result of the projection of this film onto the artist while she applies lipstick in a precise, repetitive manner, and is also recorded in black and white. The final work is the projection of the resulting layer onto the artist, and is recorded in color on video media. The artist applies lipstick over and over to the point of obsession where it covers her entire mouth in a grotesque manner, using tactics of both repetition and information layering.

All the layers are different stereotypes the artist has experienced. The result creates a haunting fusion of visually documented history and expectations projected onto the artist as a matter of cultural expectations.
